What is intellectual property and what is it for?

Inserm Transfert is responsible for managing Inserm's intellectual property and patent portfolio. We protect results generated by Inserm teams in coordination with other umbrella institutions.

"Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce." (source : WIPO).

The law provides various ways of protecting the results of intellectual effort. In the life sciences, the main subjects of protection are inventions, know-how, databases and software; they may be protected by patents, copyright (databases and software) and confidentiality clauses. Protection is essential when envisaging exploitation of research and turning discoveries into therapeutic innovations.inserm 48725WEB© Inserm / G.Auzias, S.Baillet, O.Colliot

Designing the appropriate protection strategy will enable Inserm Transfert to identify the best route for transferring projects to industry and ensuring that the inventor, the laboratory and Inserm benefit from any income that may be generated.
